Cotton and Beyond
The gold standard for luxury towel fabric is cotton, with Egyptian Giza cotton being the finest towel material in the marketplace. Egyptian Giza cotton is made from cotton grown in the fertile Nile River valley, with extra-long-staples (or fibers) that lead to an exceptionally soft, absorbent feel. That said, there are numerous varieties of high-quality cotton, including Egyptian long-staple cotton, ring-spun cotton, Turkish cotton, zero-twist cotton, combed cotton, and more, each of which offers unique features and benefits. You’ll also find luxury towels made of bamboo, modal, and modal/cotton blends which are growing increasingly popular for their sustainable production processes and performance.
GSM and Towel Weight
GSM, or "grams per square meter" is a measure of towel weight expressed as a number. GSM is used for both cotton and bamboo towels and is directly aligned with a towel’s quality, feel, and performance. The typical GSM range for a cotton bath towel is between 300 and 900 GSM. A towel or bath sheet with a higher GSM are considered the most luxurious towel; these are heavier, softer, and more absorbent, but also take longer to dry. A lighter or medium-weight towel (with a lower GSM) can still be considered a luxury towel; they may be patterned or textured and feel slightly less plush, but they are quicker to wash and dry. A general guideline to GSM ranges in cotton towels is as follows:
- 300 to 400 GSM: Lightweight, thinner, coarser (kitchen towels)
- 400 to 600 GSM: Medium to higher weight, soft and absorbent, good for a standard bath towel that dries more quickly (this is the typical weight range for hotel towels).
- 700 to 900 GSM: Heavyweight, maximum softness and absorbency; a classic luxurious and plush towel.
