What Are Coverlets?
Coverlets are typically more tightly woven than blankets, and range from simple to ornate in style. They are decorative and functional bed coverings (bedspreads) that lay on top of the bed, concealing the mattress and protecting the sheeting and blankets underneath. They can also be used as a layer of extra warmth and comfort in a cozy winter bed, where they go between the sheet or blanket and duvet cover. A well-chosen coverlet can enhance the sophistication of any bedding ensemble. Select one with a matte finish for a casual look; a sateen finish for a sleeker vibe and classic style; or a patterned cotton matelassé coverlet. You can even choose a reversible coverlet with contrasting colors and patterns. Your coverlet can set the tone for the rest of your bedding, including sheet set, duvet cover, pillow shams, and accent pieces such as a throw blanket or decorative pillow. While they are available in a variety of textiles, many coverlets are crafted from machine washable cotton, which makes them easy to care for at home.
What Is a Matelassé
A matelassé, sometimes referred to as a bedspread or blanket cover, is a specific type of bed coverlet. It features stitching in intricate designs and a raised pattern for a "quilted" look without the heavy weight of quilts. Cotton matelassé fabric is woven on a special machine known as a jacquard loom. Matelasse fabric is often woven from Egyptian cotton and provides texture pleasing to the eye and the touch. A matelassé quilt is a sophisticated choice that, like other coverlets, is made to lay between your flat sheet and duvet cover or stand alone.
How to Style Your Coverlet
Styling your coverlet is a matter of personal preference (and possibly season of the year!). Your coverlet can be used on top of your sheets as a bedspread, or between your top sheet or blanket and comforter as a luxe layer. You can also style your entire bed around a pattern, color, or print on your coverlet. The choices are limitless.
Caring for Your Coverlet
Luxury bed linen is an investment and should be cared for properly. Your coverlet is no exception. With proper care, your coverlet/bedspread will remain beautiful and comfortable for years to come. Most of our coverlets are machine washable. Always follow care guidelines and be sure to launder your coverlet and shams at the same time to ensure consistent wear.
