This article offers an overview of duvet inserts offered by SFERRA and a helpful buyer’s guide that discusses weight, fill power, price, and more.

Inside this Article:

When the weather begins to cool, our thoughts naturally turn to building a cozy, indulgent, welcoming bed in which to dream the nights away. And there’s no better place to start than with luxury Italian linen maker, SFERRA. But while SFERRA is known for its stunning sheets, duvet covers, and decorative accessories, it also offers a selection of one of the most important – and often overlooked pieces – of your bedding ensemble: your duvet insert.

The Fine Linen and Bath Design team is here to help introduce you to SFERRA’s many duvet insert options which range in warmth, fill materials, and price. This buyer’s guide will help you pick your ideal SFERRA duvet insert.

What Is a Duvet Insert?

First, let’s clarify our home décor terminology. A comforter, duvet, and duvet insert all refer to the same thing: a piece of bedding designed to fit inside a duvet cover to provide warmth and cover the bed. SFERRA offers many high-quality duvet options with various weights (warmth), fill powers, and fill materials. Most of these are made with a baffle box construction, square compartments that hold the fill material in place; this eliminates cold spots and provides for optimal thermal regulation and consistent warmth. Some duvets are styled as a blanket or quilt, with a “sewn-through” construction and design that can be placed either in a duvet cover or directly on a bed. SFERRA duvets are sewn with corner ties to secure your duvet to the cover and hold it firmly in place (an absolute must for anyone who’s ever wrestled with a duvet that has pooled at the bottom of its cover).

What are SFERRA Duvets Made and Filled With?

SFERRA duvets are made from high-thread-count cotton in percale, Batiste or sateen weaves as well as from silk. They are filled with various types of down including duck, European white goose down, and – in the most luxurious style – eiderdown. Down, which is the fluffy layer under the feathers of ducks and geese, is nearly weightless, which makes it ideal for adjusting to your body temperature while providing warmth and breathability. “Fill power” is a term used to measure the warmth of down comforters. Down clusters are graded according to their fill power (or loft) which measures their ability to regain their original volume after being compressed. A higher fill power comforter will be loftier, lighter, and warmer, and an overall superior choice. SFERRA also offers a down alternative duvet insert that is filled with hypoallergenic filling and another alternative comforter filled with non-allergenic wool; these materials are the best duvet insert options for individuals who are sensitive to feather down.

Let’s take a closer look at the SFERRA duvet collection (note: some styles are offered in light, medium, and heavyweight options; we recommend using a lighter-weight comforter for a hot sleeper or a warmer climate, and increasing weight as conditions and personal preferences dictate. As you refer to the comparison chart, you will see three prices quoted to reflect this).

SFERRA Down Alternative Duvets

Sferra Arcadia Down Alternative Duvet Inserts, Pillows and Blanket

SFERRA Arcadia Down Alternative Duvet crosses the thermal insulating properties of featherweight down with the easy-care attributes of modern techno-fibers. A baffled construction allows room for the hypoallergenic 100-percent Micro-fiber fill to breathe, keeping it fresher and helping to maintain the fills' warming properties. Sleek 330 thread count all-cotton sateen shell with double-stitched piping, available only in crisp White in medium or heavy weights. The SFERRA Arcadia Lightweight Blanket is a versatile addition to the style; it is a lightweight option sized like a duvet but sewn-through like a down blanket, with an hourglass pattern to be used by itself or with a duvet cover. Easy to wash and dry. Matching pillows are available.

Sferra Parson Down Alternative Duvet Insert

SFERRA Parson Down Alternative Duvet was inspired by the need for a luxurious alternative fiber comforter that adapts to modern life. Its zigzag pattern may be a classic, but its fill is most unusual; instead of traditional down, Parson is filled with Alpaca wool, an allergen-free natural material. This soft and thermally balanced fleece helps the animals withstand severe temperatures in the Andes, while being lightweight and breathable enough that it can be used year-round. Sewn through construction doubles as quilt. Air out, machine wash, dry clean.

No matter what style, weight, and fill duvet you choose, you will be able to use it with any SFERRA or other luxury linen duvet cover. The Fine Linen and Bath Design Team realizes that choosing a duvet is indeed an investment. Moreover, due to hygiene standards and regulations Pillows, Comforters, and mattress pads & toppers (including any Down and Alternative Down items) are not returnable under any circumstances. We encourage you to contact us for personal, individual consultation prior to purchase if you have any questions on these items. We have a limited number of sample books in our showroom that we can loan you for a brief period to review duvet sample swatches at home.

Caring for Your SFERRA Duvet

Some duvets specifically state that dry cleaning is required. For washable duvets, we recommend using a gentle, concentrated, pH-neutral laundry detergent specially formulated for luxury fabrics like Heritage Park All-Purpose Laundry Detergent. Follow the care label guidelines and do not wash your SFERRA duvet in a machine with an agitator mechanism (front loading or drum washers only). Gentle cycle only in cool or cold water is best.
