Sleep Awareness Week: Drawing Attention to an Important Health Issue
The National Sleep Foundation has named March 10th to 17th “Sleep Awareness Week 2023.” Timed to coincide with turning our clocks ahead for Daylight Savings Time, Sleep Awareness Week 2024 focuses on helping Americans find ways to get more restful, better sleep.
And -- with 1 in 3 Americans reporting they suffer from insomnia -- we definitely need to help. The consequences to sleeplessness are more serious than being a bit bleary eyed and drowsy. Insomnia and chronic sleeplessness cause motor vehicle and workplace accidents and can lead to chronic health problems and even serious illness. As a leading online retailer of fine bed linen, the issue of comfortable sleep is always top of mind for us at Fine Linen and Bath. We want to do everything we can to help our clients get the best sleep possible.
Small Steps for Improving Your Sleep Quality
Sometimes it seems that the world is conspiring to disrupt our good night’s rest. Busy schedules; the demands of work and family; and 24/7 digital distractions can all keep us awake way too late. For many, even the simple change of turning the clocks ahead can be troublesome to our sleep rhythms. Fortunately, there are things we can do to foster a healthy sleep routine:
- Wake up and go to bed at (approximately) the same time every day.
- Get exposure to light during the day to regulate your circadian rhythm.
- Exercise (but not too late in the day).
- Eat dinner several hours before bed.
- Avoid caffeine late in the day and limit alcohol.
- Establish a soothing nighttime routine with low lights and minimal stimulation.
- Put away digital devices an hour before retiring to bed.
- Create a relaxing, welcoming sleep environment that is conducive to rest, including comfortable, fresh, clean sheets.
